Automatic music composition by an artificial chemistry

Here are some sample music automatically generated by an artificial chemistry. These works were produced without human intellect, so we claim no intellectual property rights on them, except for the results of musical arrangements by human.

Sample music based on harmony

All the following phrases (sequence of notes and chords) were automatically generated without human intervention. They were then made into sound files with the piano tone, or arranged by a human to have additional voices such as percussions.

Samples of four-bar 8th-note phrases (repeated)

Samples of four-bar phrases with various note durations (repeated)

Samples of not-repeating phrases

How were they generated?

The following paper illustrates how a four-bar 8th-note phrase can be automatically generated.

Tomoya Miura and Kazuto Tominaga: An approach to algorithmic music composition with an artificial chemistry. In Explorations in the Complexity of Possible Life (Proceedings of the 7th German Workshop on Artificial Life (GWAL-7)), 2006.

Sample polyphonic music

The following phrase is composed of two upper and lower melodies. Both are generated by the artificial chemistry.

The overview of how they were generated is found in the following paper.

Kazuto Tominaga and Masafumi Setomoto: An Artificial-Chemistry Approach to Generating Polyphonic Musical Phrases. In Applications of Evolutionary Computing (Proceedings of EvoWorkshops 2008; LNCS 4974), pp463-472, Springer, 2008.

Generating beats

We generated beats using the artificial-chemistry simulator and add them to a generated phrase and chords.

The method to generate beats will be published soon.
